Thrissur: The Thrissur DCC here has alleged that the recent flood in the district was man- made rather than a natural calamity.
According to the complaint filed by DCC general secretary and corporation councilor A. Prasad with minister for water resources K. Krishnankutty, lack of proper maintenance of drainage, weed-filled canals and the temporary bunds near Enamavu regulator and Panchikkal at Ayyanthole caused the flooding that led to the opening of more than 300 camps in the district.
Heavy rains had lashed the district causing water-logging on roads and flooding in residential areas from August 5 to 14.
“It is to be noted that efforts were made to unblock several drainage and culverts after the residents affected by floods complained to the officials of civic body,” he said. “Soon after it, the floodwater levels sunk bringing down the number of camps in the district to 145.”
The DCC functionary said water-logging continued for several days at Hari Nagar, which is the largest residential colony in state with 480 houses. When the slabs covering the drainage were opened, it was found the there was clogging. And soon after clearing the drainage, the flood waters dipped in no time,” he pointed out.
Several water channels in the kole fields were reclaimed and they need to be reinstated, he said.
