AI to power Kochi cops check traffic

The AI-enabled cameras will be placed all along the city limits and connected to a newly built police control room.

Kochi: The Kochi City Police will implement Artificial Intel-ligence (AI) enabled surveillance system to strengthen the city’s security, including the control of traffic, as part of the Area Based Development project by Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML).

The AI-enabled cameras will be placed all along the city limits and connected to a newly built police control room.

According to Control Room assistant commissioner S.T. Sureshkumar, the feasibility study for the proposed project was already completed. The cameras in the system will be connected to a unified AI network which will be accessible from the Control Room only.

In this system, the vehicles or persons once booked for committing any offence will be automatically detected by the camera once they enter the city limits. “The system will automatically send an alert to the police Control Room and their movement will be continuously monitored and recorded,” the officer said. “It will take six months to one year to complete initial stages of the project, including the placement of the cameras.”

The system can also be used for several purposes in traffic such as alerting police about emergencies like accidents, giving alerts to public on traffic diversions, etc.

Meanwhile, according to an official with the CSML, the Detailed Project Planning (DPR) has already been prepared on the project and it is expected to be implemented by the end of this year.

“We are implementing Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS) which is a cloud-based video surveillance system where video is located in the cloud. It is like a plug-in system so that the police can add on any number of cameras later, may be up to 10,000,” the official said. “Besides, the Biometric Artificial Intelligence like facial recognition with maximum accuracy will be added to the system.”

It is also learnt that a discussion is going on with the corporation in limiting the initial cost as the estimate in the DPR was higher.
