Centre confirms Ladakh scuffle

There were reports that there was a scuffle between troops of the two sides along with stone-pelting.

New Delhi: India has officially ‘confirmed’ the occurrence of the ‘incident’ at the Pangong-Tso lake in Ladakh, eastern J&K, on August 15 between Indian and Chinese troops, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) saying “such incidents are not in the interest of either side.

There were reports that there was a scuffle between troops of the two sides along with stone-pelting. However, the MEA refused to “confirm” any details the incident or what had exactly happened. The MEA also said India would ‘continue to engage with China to find a mutually-acceptable solution’ to the ‘sensitive’ Doklam issue, adding that the reported comment of the Japanese ambassador (indicating support to India on the Doklam issue) “speaks for itself”.

Interestingly, the MEA also said it is “not in a position (so far) to announce the dates” or even confirm PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Xiamen in China next month for the BRICS Summit but indicated that any confirmation could be done at a later date.

On the face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh, the MEA Spokesperson said, “There was an incident at Pangong Tso (lake) on August 15. (But) I am not confirming any stone-pelting. Such incidents are not in the interest of either side,” adding that both sides should maintain peace and tranquillity on the LAC.
