Confusion over Tamil Nadu medical council chief's resignation
Chennai: Confusion prevailed at the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) on Thursday as president Dr K. Senthil allegedly lost his cool over being forced to resign. “Dr Senthil had come to the council as soon as it opened, broke the glass door with a stick, following which, he took the council vehicle and left,” alleged a source. The president, however, denied the incident. “I went there to get some material. The assistant was trying to open the office door, however, it was stuck. It accidentally broke and now the members are blaming me,” said Dr Senthil.
“With regard to the office vehicle, it is unfair that they can accuse me as even if they say I resigned, I am still a member so I have every right to use the vehicle,” he said. Based on an agreement formed within the council, it was decided the three senior members, including Dr Senthil, would take charge as president for six to eight months each. “When Dr Senthil took charge, it was agreed upon by the members that he would stay in power for six months,” said vice president Dr J.A. Jayalal.
Dr Senthil, therefore, had given a resignation letter stating that he is resigning on August 17, he said. “We have called for a council meeting on September 6, to elect the next president. In the executive meeting held on Wednesday, it was decided that if Dr Senthil wants to continue as president, he must contest in the council meeting,” said Dr Jayalal. “Dr Senthil hadn’t put a date and there is no such thing in the Tamil Nadu Medical Council Act stating that the vice president has to take charge once the president resigns,” said a source.
Dr Senthil said, “I heard that people were ganging up and trying to misuse the letter so I wrote to the registrar stating that if a letter is being submitted in my name, to consider it withdrawn. An unlawful meeting was convened, wherein some resolution was passed stating that they are accepting my resignation. They are merely trying to push me out by illegal means.”
