Steps on to ban ‘Tik Tok’ app, says IT minister M Manikandan

The Minister said the State government has already initiated the process of banning the app.

CHENNAI: The state government on Thursday assured to take steps through the Centre to get the mobile application ‘Tik Tok’ banned, Information Technology Minister M. Manikandan informed the Assembly Thursday.

Responding to the issue raised by Nagapattinam legislator Thamimun Ansari, the Minister said the State government has already initiated the process of banning the app, in the wake of media reports on deaths of users, wrong decisions taken by them and performance of stunts.

“A letter has already been sent to the Central government to ban the Tik Tok app, in February this year. A reminder letter would be sent soon,” Mr Manikandan said.

Recalling the recent events leading to a ban on the app and how it got revoked later, he said the State government would take steps for sure to ban the Tik Tok app.

As the powers to allow or block an app rests with the Central government, any move to get the app removed from public use should be through the Computer Emergency Response Team based in Delhi, he said and added a nodal officer functioned from Tamil Nadu as well.
