Each water supply snag hits Cantonment for a week

The current delay in restoring water supply to the Cantonment area is a result of the breakdown in water supply in the city on July 14 and 15.

Hyderabad: Breakdowns in water supply within city limits leave the Secunderabad cantonment affected for at least one week at a time. The areas most affected during breakdowns are Marredpally, Karkhana and Rasoolpura.

The current delay in water supply to the cantonment is a result of the breakdown in water supply in the city on July 14 and 15. A technical issue resulted in heavy leakage in the Krishna drinking water supply.

While similar situations arise during maintenance and pumping work, officials from the Secunderabad Cantonment Board’s water supply wing said, “Whatever the reason, any water supply breakdown in the city severely affects the cantonment.” They said full recovery would take at least one week and there will be deviations from the regular supply schedule.

Generally, Rasoolpura and surrounding areas receive water only five days a week and in case of a breakdown in the area, residents might have to wait for up to 10 days before supply is restored.

Residents, irked by the situation demand the state government to intervene and rectify the situation.

Mr Satish Gupta from Vasavinagar Welfare Association who carried out a 40-day door-to-door signature campaign against irregular water supply said, “Cantonment residents pay more than GHMC residents, yet we don’t receive the water we need, and every breakdown affects us severely. We want the state government to take the necessary action in this regard.”

According to official information, the cantonment area receives 5.9 million gallons of water per day. During periods of shortage, the supply drops to 5-5.4 million gallons per day. Another official from the water wing said the area requires at least 10 million gallons per day for regular water supply to the growing population in the cantonment.
