6 Tata Institute of Social Sciences students move High Court against halting classes
Hyderabad: Some students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Hyderabad, approached the High Court on Thursday, seeking suspension of the notice issued by the acting registrar to close academic activities on the campus sine die.
TISS student N. Aravind Karthick and five others, who hail from different states and are staying in hostels, alleged that the institute was deliberately refusing to meet the genuine demands of its students. The petitioners said that TISS had violated its undertaking to provide hostels to students in December 2018 when it promised to continue playing the role of arranging accommodation for students with their active participation till it secures its own campus. Instead of following the undertaking, the institute had handed over the accommodation service to private service providers after shifting the campus from Rajendranagar to Brahmanpalli village in Ranga Reddy district. The service providers were demanding an upfront payment of the entire semester’s hostel and food fees amounting to Rs 54,700 which includes an “irrational” caution deposit of Rs 10,000 for five months.
This issue had become a dispute between the students and TISS and led to protests by the students
