Lok Sabha to hold debate on No-Confidence Motion on Friday

Opposition parties CPI, CPM, RSP and the Samajwadi Party have supported the TD's no confidence motion.

Vijayawada: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan admitted the notice of No Confidence Motion (NCM) given by the Telugu Desam on Tuesday, the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.

Opposition parties — CPI, CPM, RSP and the Samajwadi Party have supported the TD’s no confidence motion.

The NCM notices given by the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party were also admitted by the Speaker and they will be taken up for discussion on Friday.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge objected to the Speaker for not first reading out the names of the parties that are stronger than the Telugu Desam.

The Speaker named all Opposition members who had moved similar NCMs and said that TD’s Kesineni Srinivas would move his motion as his name had come up in the lottery. The TD has thanked the Opposition parties that extended their support to the NCM.

Mr Srinivas gave the notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General on Monday.

He moved the motion during Zero Hour on the first day of the monsoon session.

It may be recalled that in August 2003, the Congress with the help of other Opposition parties had brought a motion of no-confidence against the Atal Behari Vajpayee-led NDA government following re-induction of George Fernandes in the Union cabinet as defence minister.

NDA had survived no-trust vote in ’03

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan admitted the notice of No-Confidence Motion given by the TD on Tuesday.

It may be recalled that in August 2003, the Congress with the help of other Opposition parties had brought a motion of no-confidence.

At that time, although the then NDA Government had sufficient numbers, the Opposition saw it as an opportunity to put the NDA in the dock on different issues. The NDA secured 312 votes, and the opposition vote count was 186.

A notice for a no-trust motion needs the support of at least 50 MPs. Though the TD has served the notice, it does not put the NDA in any jeopardy. The BJP has 273 members in the LS, well over the half-way mark, besides its allies.
