Toxic foam rises again at Dharaninagar nala in Kukatpally

A restraining wall was planned and slated for construction this month but hasn't begun yet.

Hyderabad: Despite regular checks and diversion plans by the municipality and PCB, the lake and drain in Dharaninagar in Kukatpally has once again foamed up after the rains yesterday. Toxic froth covered the nala which drains the excess water from Parakhi Cheruvu. This is the third time the lake and drainage area have foamed up this monsoon.

In June this year after the first instance of flash rains, the lake had foamed up, after which PCB came in to analyze the water. Previous reports had suggested an extremely high level of phosphates and sulphates which were indicative of the untreated sewerage, said PCB. They said the sewerage contained large quantities of detergents that were poisoning the lake. The officials had not ruled out the possibility of illegal dumping of toxic waste either.

The drain which runs very close to the housing society has also filled up alarmingly and the residents worry it may spill over to their colony if the rains continue. A restraining wall was planned and slated for construction this month but hasn't begun yet.

"It's all on paper; they would never utilize this money for good", said Auzam Maudood whose house is close to the drain.
