Parents fret over rise in drug cases in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Rohini, a class XI student from a well known school returned home from a trip and pleading tiredness, retired to her room. She woke up several hours later but preferred to stay in her room and not step out and be with the family. Her alert parents who had read about drug abuse in certain schools, including hers, in the social media, panicked. When her strange behaviour continued for the next two days, they took her to a doctor.
Sreshta, another student, studying in the IX grade of an international school in the city, suddenly started performing poorly in school. Her behavior also became a bit abnormal over a few weeks. Her parents, also aware of the drug abuse and racketing in schools that was being uncovered, also panicked and sought help from their doctor.
Both girls were taken to psychologists. Rohini was found stressed due to her hectic schedule. But Sreshta turned out to be a victim of drug abuse.
Same was the case with Raksha of class XII studying in one of the top schools in the city. When her parents at the advice of the doctor made her go through some tests, she tested positive for LSD.
After the recent drug bust, parents of kids from these schools are on high alert, and even the slightest change of behavior in their wards, are prompting them to take the children to the doctors.
In the case of Rohini, her parents suspected that she was under the effect of drugs and forcefully took her to a psychologist in the city. However their fear turned to be baseless as she tested negative for drugs.
Shreshta's parents were into business and she went to school every day in a car. While her elder brother excelled in academics, her grades were never too good. During summer vacation, her parents told that she should improve, but it became worse. When they took her to a doc, they realized she was a victim and it was the driver who had helped her. He kept all her movements and activities secret from parents, for which he was given handsome tips by the child.
Shreshta had procured LSD from peddlers over whatsapp groups. The parents have dismissed the driver and the mother has resigned from her job to be with the daughter. However, Shreshta's school name was not in the rumoured list of drug abuse victims, which only goes to show that that the web is probably far wider than believed.
