New 5-member panel to oversee medical council

On Tuesday the Solicitor General informed the court that it had been decided to set up a fresh panel.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Centre to replace the oversight committee set up to supervise the functioning of the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a fresh panel of five eminent persons.

A five-judge Constitution bench of Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justices J. Chelameswar, R.K. Agrawal, D.Y. Chandrachud and Abdul Nazeer had on Monday asked the Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar that there must be an alternative mechanism to deal with the problems of medical colleges, which will be a substitute of the oversight committee.

On Tuesday the Solicitor General informed the court that it had been decided to set up a fresh panel comprising five eminent persons, including doctors. The CJI after perusing the names of the persons who would form the panel said, “We are satisfied with the names. We will also give liberty to the Centre to replace any doctor in the list with another if he does not wish to be a part of the panel.”
