Nagaland Governor orders floor test today

The Governor has also clarified that agenda of the special session should be to test the majority support of the present cabinet.

Guwahati: The Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya on Tuesday directed the Speaker of the Nagaland Assembly to convene a special session of the House on Wednesday to test the majority of the present cabinet led by Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu.

The letter to convene the house came soon after the Kohima bench of the Guwahati High Court upheld the decision of the Governor directing the present Chief Minister to prove his majority on the floor of the house.

The Governor has also clarified that agenda of the special session should be to test the majority support of the present cabinet. “The report of the proceedings and resolution of the House may be communicated to me forthwith and House shall be adjourned sine die after conclusion of the business relating to the above agenda,” the letter sent to the Speaker Imtiwapang Aier said.

Mr Liezietsu had moved the court on July 14 and pleaded that the governor’s decision asking him to take a floor test on or before July 15 was “unconstitutional, illegal and arbitrary” and violated of the basic features of the Constitution. The Chief Minister was asked to take the floor test after his Naga People’s Front (NPF) colleague and former chief minister T.R. Zeliang staked claim to form the government.
