Karnataka: NS Megharikh takes charge as DGP

Mr Rao, who formally handed over charge to Mr Megharikh, was sullen while walking out of office.

BENGALURU: A day after DGP H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao and DIG R. Roopa Moudgil were shunted out of the prisons department, ADGP N.S. Megharikh took charge as the ADGP&IGP of the prison department on Tuesday evening. Meanwhile, the government has replaced Ms Roopa with DIG H.S. Revanna.

Mr Rao, who formally handed over charge to Mr Megharikh, was sullen while walking out of office. After assuming charge, Mr Megharikh told reporters that he will assess the situation before taking any decision and vowed to set things in order in the department.

It is learnt that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given clear instructions to Mr Megharikh to find out all the loopholes in the department and plug them.

Ms Roopa, who was transferred as Commissioner for Transport and Road Safety, took charge in her new posting on Tuesday morning. When she arrived at the police chief's office to take charge, media people asked her whether she felt it was a punishment transfer. "There is nothing called good transfer or punishment transfer. Whatever responsibility is given to us, we have to perform it," she replied.

The DIG (Prisons) post, which was vacant after Ms Roopa's transfer on Monday, was filled by DIG (Headquarters) H.S. Revanna. He is likely to take charge on Wednesday or Thursday. He has been given the additional charge of the post of Chief Superintendent of Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. Krishna Kumar, who was the Chief Superintendent, was transferred without any posting on Monday.
