Choked manholes, power cuts plague Hyderabad

Power outages are another point of worry with several localities plunging into darkness on Monday night.

Hyderabad: Incessant rains have spelt trouble for residents living in low lying areas of the Old City. Several families in Tallabkatta, Bhavaninagar, Phoolbagh, Lalithabagh and Hassannagar faced immense difficulty in moving in the neighbourhoods.

“The manholes get clogged with inflows of sand and construction waste. As a result it takes several hours for rain water to flow out of the colonies,” said Mr. Anwarullah, a businessman from Tallabkatta.

Road conditions turned worse following frequent spells of heavy rains.

For instance, the Tallabkatta to Bibi Bazaar road which till last week was dusty due to recent drainage and pipeline work is now reduced to a road filled with potholes. “Earlier it was difficult to drive through the uneven dusty road. Now the road has come under sheet of water and it is better to avoid it lest the wheel lands in a crater resulting in a fall,” fears Mr G. Rajendar, a resident of Gowlipura. It was a similar scene on the Bibi-ka-Chasma road where the road was dug up three months ago for laying of waterlines.

“The contractor informed us that it will take another three months for restoring the road,” informed Mohd Faisal, a local shop keeper.

It was no different scenario at the Balapur where motorists traverse through a water puddles. Several stretches on the Meerpet – Balapur and Champapet were under a sheet of heavy water on Tuesday. Mr. A Prakash, a cab driver says that is just beginning of our woes. “If the rain continues for next two days, the roads will convert into tanks,” he complains.

Power outages are another point of worry with several localities plunging into darkness on Monday night. “Situation was no different on Tuesday when it rained continuously during the day. The power supply was affected at least thrice in several areas” complained Mr. Amjedullah Khan, former corporator.
