New tank near Hussainsagar

The enclosure, 45x45 metre runs four metres deep with the water standing up to 3.5 metres.

Hyderabad: A permanent enclosure for immersion of Ganesha idols at Hussainsagar will be built near Sanjeevaiah Park on a half-an-acre parcel of land.

The enclosure, 45x45 metre runs four metres deep with the water standing up to 3.5 metres. Idols up to 10 feet can be immersed in the tank. GHMC officials say 90 per cent of idols brought to Hussainsagar for immersion are below 10 feet.

This will be the second permanent enclosure after the one at Cherlapally Lake. Irrigation superintendent engineer Y. Shekhar Reddy said that the immersion tank would be located 100 metres from Sanjeevaiah Park.

“The tank will have safety railings. Around 28 lakh litres of water will be needed to fill the tank, which will be drawn from the Hussainsagar. About 2,000 idols can be immersed on a single day and the HMDA will remove the idols immediately,” he said.

The department has proposed immersion tanks at 44 lakes; 10 will be taken up in 2016, 20 next year and the remaining in the third year. The tanks will have outlets and inlets, and officers say for every immersion, fresh water will be pumped into the tanks.
