State seeks more trains to Bengaluru

Nearly 300 private luxury buses are conducting daily service to Bengaluru due to the high demand in the sector.

KOCHI: The state government has asked the railways to operate two additional train services daily in the Bengaluru sector besides deploying additional coaches in trains currently operating to the garden city and back.

State minister in charge of railways G. Sudhakaran said this in the assembly while replying to a question raised by N. Shamsudheen, MLA.

“Nearly 300 private luxury buses are conducting daily service to Bengaluru due to the high demand in the sector..A lot many people are travelling to Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka for study and job purposes alone. We require an additional 12,000 seats daily to resolve the commuting woes,” the minister said.

The state government has received a complaint from the Thrissur Railway Passengers Association which pointed out the exploitation of passengers by the private bus lobby and pointed out the need for operating more trains in the sector. “The same was forwarded to the railways for action,” he said.

Meanwhile, the railways have no plans to deploy additional daily trains in the sector after introducing the Kochuveli-Banaswadi Humsafar Express in October 20 last.

“Special trains are operated by zonal railways from time to time to clear the extra rush specially during Summer festival..,” it said in reply to an RTI query raised by Thiruvananthapuram native Ajay S Kumar.
