Bengaluru: Cancelled! Steel flyover crumbles before citizens’ might
Bengaluru: In a huge win for the Bengaluru citizens who opposed the proposed steel flyover, a six lane bridge between Basaveshwara circle and Hebbal Junction, the state government on Tuesday submitted before the High Court that the 'project stands cancelled'.
The advocate for the state government submitted a memo dated May 2017 citing that the project has been cancelled.
The state has also submitted the notification in this regard. Taking into account the memo filed by the state, the High Court disposed of the petitions challenging the project.
Several organisations had held a massive protest against the project when it was announced in 2016. Though the project was put on hold following the protests, it came close to be revived when deputy chief minister Dr. G. Parameshwara announced that the government will review the project on January 1, as it was seen as a the best measure to ease traffic congestion.
The project was however dropped prior to the review, after the National Green Tribunal ruled against it. Previously, the High Court had ruled that the Bangalore Development Autho rity (BDA) needed the clearance of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority- Karnataka (SEIAAK). It was Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF) which approached the court after BDA allegedly did not respond to Right to Information applications on the project. It may be recalled that an 8,000-person human chain protest along the route of the proposed flyover from Cha-lukya Circle to Esteem Mall was held in February 2016.
The Rs 1800 crore project was also challenged on several grounds including the claim that it is in violation of Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act and various High Court orders.
