13 days late, monsoon arrives quietly in Telangana
Hyderabad: Thirteen days after the normal date and five days later than last year, the southwest monsoon finally arrived in Telangana on Saturday. On Saturday, the monsoon covered Nalgonda and Khammam districts completely and parts of Hyderabad, Mahbubnagar and Warangal. There was not much rain in the city to mark its arrival.
The normal onset date for the monsoon over AP is June 1 and June 5 for Telangana. Last year it set in over AP on June 10 and Telangana on June 13.
The India Meteorological Department said conditions were favourable for the monsoon to cover the entire state in the next 48 hours.
IMD-Hyderabad director Y.K. Reddy said, “The southwest monsoon should have covered Telangana by June 10 but there has been a delay of eight days. In 48 hours, it is expected to cover the entire state.”
He said the delay would not have any impact on the amount of rainfall as predicted by IMD in its forecast for monsoon. The weather was pleasant throughout the day in Hyderabad and there were showers towards the evening at many parts of the city.
The maximum temperature in Hyderabad fell from Friday’s 38ºC degrees to 31.2ºC on Saturday. As per AccuWeather, the maximum temperature in the city might stay restricted to just around 28ºC on Sunday, which will see cloudy skies and a few thundershowers. However, for the following three days, light rainfall has been predicted with maximum temperatures at 29-31ºC.
Light rainfall was experienced at isolated places in all districts of Telangana. The maximum rainfall of 5 cm was recorded at Tekulapalle in Khammam district. In most parts of TS, the maximum temperature was recorded at 35-38ºC.
The highest of 40ºC was recorded at Ramagundam in Karimnagar. Also on Saturday, the remaining parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh were covered by the monsoon, covering the entire state.
