Flood victim Krishnamma to get new home

Suseela Babu, ward member, said that under the project, the Kuttamangalam cooperative society will construct the house spending Rs 5 lakh.

Alappuzha: Krishanamma, 68, of Thomachira, Mullakkal village in ward No-1 of Kainakary panchayat, can hope to live in a new house soon. She has been included in the beneficiary list of 'Care Home scheme,' a housing project introduced by the cooperative department. Krishnamma, who had lost everything, including her decrepit house, in the floods in August last, was living in a shed along with her daughter. Her plight was reported by this paper in February.

Suseela Babu, ward member, said that under the project, the Kuttamangalam cooperative society will construct the house spending Rs 5 lakh. The construction will be started soon as the model code of conduct imposed for the elections has ended, she said.

Krishanamma, who suffered a stroke a few years ago, is unable to move around. She is dependent on the meagre income of her second daughter Sreelekha, who gets her wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Krishnamma requires at least Rs 2000 for medicines every month. Her son died at a young age and the elder daughter is married off.

The Care Home project, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in December last, was planned by the cooperative department to construct new houses for 2,000 flood-hit families. The cooperative department will contribute Rs 4 lakh and the state disaster management authority Rs 1 lakh for each house.
