Dry Srisailam stops generating

Power plant meets 45 pc of AP’s power needs.

Kurnool: Power generation at Srisailam hydel power station came to a halt on Saturday due to non-availability of water in the reservoir.

Srisailam reservoir had hit the dead storage level of 807 feet, below which power cannot be generated, said Srisailam superintendent engineer Peddi Ranga Rao.

About 45 per cent of the power needs of Andhra Pradesh are met by Srisailam. Telangana too gets a significant portion of its power from the hydel power station.

Mr Rao said AP power house had utilised 94.25 tmc ft of water and generated 555.11 million units between from September 15, 2018 to April 15, 2019.

“Telangana power house had utilised 140.69 tmc ft of water and generated 969.72 million units during the same period,” he said.

Mr Rao said the power supply from Srisailam power station was disrupted from June and September last year, after the Krishna Water Tribunal directed the Telugu states to stop generation of power until the pending allocation of water was completed. Power generation resumed only September 15, 2018, the engineer said.

Without the power supply from the hydro energy, a retired engineer, Mr Nalla Reddy, said the accretion to the grid would get affected and Andhra Pradesh would be forced to buy at a market determined rates from the power exchange.

TS too could face hardship as Kaleshwaram and other projects may put extra burden on the TS Genco to contract power at market determined prices, Mr Reddy said.
