CPM keen to drop killer party' tag, changes tack
Thiruvananthapuram: The recent killing of RSS man in Kannur has forced the CPM state leadership to take a stern stand against political killings in the district.
The murder that took place in Payyannur is also being seen in some quarters as an act which completely negates chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's initiative to broker peace in the trouble torn district. Three months ago the Chief Minister had taken personal initiative to convene a meeting of top CPM and RSS leaders, the first of its kind, to end violence.
Since the initiative was taken at the chief minister’s level, both CPM and RSS were hopeful of a positive outcome. The CPM believes that incidents like Payyannur murder could derail these peace initiatives.
Kodiyeri’s statement promising internal inquiry and strict action if party men are found guilty, reflected the party’s resolve to end the bloody trail of violence in Kannur.
CPM is wary of the campaign unleashed by RSS across the country branding them as a "killer" party. In March, the RSS had organised anti-CPM meetings in most districts across the country. It was during one of these meetings that RSS leader Kundan Chandravat issued death threat to Pinarayi.
The BJP has been prompt in sending union ministers to the spot to meet bereaved families after every murder. Through such high profile VVIP visits, the BJP seeks to draw national media attention towards Kannur violence on the one hand and boost the morale of workers on the other.
It is no secret that CPM too has lost equal or more number of cadres in political violence unleashed by RSS-BJP. But the Sangh Parivar has managed to create an impression in many parts of country that its workers were at the receiving end of unilateral violence unleashed by CPM. Despite such provocative actions and false propaganda, the chief minister is keen on restoring peace in Kannur.
