Chennai records 42.6 degree Celsius, hottest since 2014

The temperature recorded in Meenambakkam was even higher, touching 43.6 degree Celsius, a new high in the last 15 years, sources said.

Chennai: Chennai on Thursday recorded the hottest day since 2014. According to weather office sources here the city recorded a maximum temperature of 42.6 degree Celsius in Nungmabkkam.

The temperature recorded in Meenambakkam was even higher, touching 43.6 degree Celsius, a new high in the last 15 years, sources said.

According to Regional Meteorological Centre weather bulletin, thunderstorm accompanied with gusty wind is likely to occur at isolated places over interior Tamil Nadu on Thursday, but there will not be any significant change in the weather for next five days.

Attributing it to heat waves, RMC director S. Balachandran said, “The land breeze blowing towards northwest has led to the rise in temperatures. Easterlies shall bring no relief to the city and temperature can soar high further in the coming days. Similar pattern of weather will prevail for next 5 days, resulting in soaring temperatures. The mild showers received on Tuesday morning turned out to be a rare happening and there are no signs of rain to the city.”

Weather blogger Pradeep John said that Chennai is likely to remain dry for at least a week. However,

interior regions like Trichy, Vellore and Cuddalore will receive heavy rainfall.
“Similar heat situations are to prevail in the coming days as the land breeze travelling from Andhra Pradesh shall lead to rise in temperatures”, he added.
