Aadhaar not must yet in Thiruvananthapuram corporation

The applicants would hesitate to turn up for some minor reason, according to officials.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram corporation has not made Aadhaar card mandatory for issuing birth, death and marriage certificates.
Certificates issued by school authorities, school leaving certificates and hospital registration details took precedence over Aadhaar card at the adalat where pending files of birth, death and marriage certificates were to be considered.
Aadhaar card is demanded, only if no other document of proof exists, said an official.

“We want to make the process as easy for the people as possible,” the official says. Though there were more than 6,500 pending files from 2014 and 2015, only over 150 applicants turned up on the first day.

The applicants would hesitate to turn up for some minor reason, according to officials. In some cases, they would file a fresh application and the first file would be pending, as the corporation had no means to cross-check, they said.

The applicants would just need to furnish one document of proof, or one detail, but the applicants would not come, they said. This was the case with Sajin Saji, 26, choreographer, who submitted an application for a birth certificate in 2014.

The corporation needed just one little detail – the name of the hospital where he was born – to issue a certificate. Though the civic body had sent out mails asking for this, there was no response.

During this time, Sajin missed many a dance show abroad, as he could not apply for a passport without the birth certificate.

There were around 3,500 pending files of 1,65,000 applications submitted in 2014, and 3,205 pending files of 1,48,000 applications submitted in 2015.
The adalat, inaugurated on Thursday by LSGD Minister K.T. Jaleel, will be conducted over five days. On the first two days, files from 2014 will be taken up. On May 20, 30 and 31, files from 2015 will be considered.
