Kochi: KSDMA warns of heavy rains, wind and lightning

If you are inside the house, avoid taking baths and don\'t wash dishes. Close all doors and windows and stay away from them.

Kochi: The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued alert against strong lightning, thunderstorm with heavy rains and winds in the afternoon for the next five days in the state. There are chances for strong lightning from 2 pm to 8 pm and people have been asked to take necessary precautionary measures.

As per the safety guidelines issued by the authority, children should not be allowed to play in open spaces form 2 pm to 8 pm.

It is dangerous to stand under tall objects like trees, if you are outside. If in a car, park in open spaces, away from water bodies and don't touch metal parts.

If you are inside the house, avoid taking baths and don't wash dishes. Close all doors and windows and stay away from them.

Also avoid using landline phones, televisions, and other appliances that conduct electricity. Unplug all electric home appliances and avoid contact with metal objects. Buildings can be made safe by installing lightning arresters.

As the election campaign has entered the final frenzied phase, the candidates and political party workers have been asked to avoid using mike and top platforms during thunderstorm and lightning.

As per the safety guidelines, it is safe to touch the victim if someone is hit by lightning. The victim should be given first aid as the first 30 seconds are crucial. Pet animals also have to be given safe shelter, says the KSDMA warning.

During the summer rains on Wednesday, two persons were killed in lightning at Vettickal near Mulanthuruthy in Ernakulam district.

Meanwhile, heavy rains also have been predicted for few districts for next two days. In the wake of forecast, yellow alert has been issued in Malappuram.
