Hyderabad: Patients suffering from the end-stage kidney failure can be stabilised within 48 hours of presentation if peritoneal dialysis is started immediately, according to a paper published in the journal Blood Purification.
The study was conducted in Hyderabad between March 2016 and August 2017, with 56 patients as subjects. The aim was to compare the effects of the use of peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis in patients with end-stage renal failure.
Senior nephrologist Dr K.S. Nayak, a member of the research team that carried out the study, said, “Patients who had severe metabolic acidosis and had undergone two emergency sessions of haemo-dialysis were given peritoneal dialysis. They were found to stabilise within 48 hours in the ICU. The results are encouraging as they demonstrate that peritoneal dialysis can be used in critical care.”
It is for the first time that such a study has been carried out. Further studies into the stages of critical care and its efficacy are needed before peritoneal dialysis can be used.
