Kerala HC seeks magistrate explanation

Kochi: The High Court on Wednesday asked Parur judicial magistrateto explain why he failed to remand Sreejith, 26, who died in police custody, and others the police produced them.

He, however, declined to consider the remand report on the same day and returned them.

The Varapuzha sub-inspector filed a report to the Aluva rural SP that the magistrate declined to hear the remand report.

The rural SP then filed a complaint with the high court registrar incorporating statements of the police officials who have accompanied them to the residence of the magistrate.

Sreejith was kept in custody on the night of April 7 before being hospitalised in a critical condition on April 8. He died on April 9. The HC registrar has sought an explanation from the judicial magistrate based on the complaint.
