Hyderabad: Infant transfused with wrong blood
Hyderabad: A wrong blood transfusion occurred when blood group of three months old baby named Druvan showed O positive in Niloufer Hospital and B positive in a private diagnostic center.
Druvan had been admitted to the hospital on April 6 with infection and Klebsiella sepsis which requires emergency and critical care.
The father Mahesh from Jiyaguda brought the child in a very critical condition and the first blood transfusion which was carried out was of O positive blood group. But Druvan’s condition continued to be critical and Mahesh took a blood sample and got it tested in a private blood bank. In the blood bank, the blood was found out to be of B positive group and there was a huge protest against the hospital for not providing proper treatment.
Niloufer Hospital doctors released a written explanation to the director and also the state health department which stated that blood grouping in the neonates and infants up to six months of age is not established properly due to poor expression of antigens and antibodies in the blood.
But, the private blood bank did not face the same issue while testing the child’s blood. O positive blood group was transferred as it is the safest option. Doctors stated that there have not been any reactions after the transfer of the blood. But now B positive is showing as the blood match due to the antigen expression which has been conveyed to the family members.
Dr Murali Krishna superintendent of Niloufer Hospital explained, “The baby is under treatment in the emergency ward and presently the vitals are stable. We are giving symptomatic and supportive treatment.”
