Tamil Nadu: No action plan to handle water crisis

Drinking water supply through pipes has stopped in several parts of south Chennai.

Chennai: Drinking water supply through pipes has stopped in several parts of south Chennai and there is no action plan from Chennai Metro Water to handle the drought situation, said former Chennai mayor M. Subramanian after meeting Chennai Metro Water managing director Arun Roy on Tuesday.

The Saidapet legislator while submitting a list of works that have to be done to enhance drinking water supply also demanded 300 overhead water tanks from Metro Water and ensure daily water supply trips for the tanks until pipe water supply is restored in his Saidapet constituency. More than 100 overhead plastic tanks were damaged during the recent cyclone Vardah and the tanks that washed ashore during the Chennai floods in 2015 had not been replaced till date. This had affected water distribution in Saidapet, Ekattuthangal and Labour colony, Subramanian said.

Roy assured action on the water crisis of Saidapet. Drinking water shortage issue is looming across Chennai and the steps taken by the state are not sufficient to meet the growing demand, he added.
