NTPC power generation cost drops 39.5 paise to below Rs 2 per unit
Hyderabad: The overall cost of power generation in the thermal power plants owned by National Thermal Power Corporation has dropped below Rs 2 per unit.
NTPC has managed to bring down the cost of power generation by 39.5 paise per unit. Interestingly, the cost of power production in the Mauda project in Maharashtra declined by Rs 1.65 per unit.
The overall cost of power production in 2014-15 stood at Rs 2.01 per unit and it dipped to Rs 1.94 in 2016-17.
Officials said the overall cost of power generation per unit had come down to below Rs 2 due to improvement in coal quality and supply. They said that new power projects with high dependence on imported coal have benefited the most.
The cost of power generation in Barh Stage II in Bihar, Badarpur in Delhi and Tanda project in Uttar Pradesh has fell due to supply of quality coal.
The cost of power generation in Barh State II is Rs 1.24 per unit, in Badarpur it is Rs 1.16 and in Tanda, the cost of power generation per unit is Rs 0.93.
At present NTPC has 20 thermal power plants across the country with 38,755 MW installed capacity.
NTPC is the largest thermal power generation company in the country, owning about a quarter of thermal power generation projects.
A TSTransco official said that NTPC indicates an encouraging trend in power generation cost. He said in the next three years, cost of power charges and tariffs will fall across the country.
Several states like Punjab, Haryana and others have reduced power tariffs due to availability of surplus power within the state and also in the country.
