Long wait is over: Arasu Cable to go digital finally

Arasu Cable TV began providing services in Tamil Nadu in September 2, 2011.

CHENNAI: The long wait of over 65 lakh subscribers of state-owned Arasu Cable TV Corporation to go digital is finally over. People in rural areas across Tamil Nadu will now access to digital cable television with the Union information and broadcasting ministry granting Digital Addressable System (DAS) to the cable television firm.

The AIADMK government led by late J . Jayalalithaa has been seeking the Union government's permission for DAS licence ever since it came to power in 2011, but the then UPA Government put the file on the backburner due to alleged pressure from the DMK whose family owns cable TV network and television channels. Late J. Jayalalithaa had submitted several memorandums to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his successor Narendra Modi on the issue during her meetings with them. “Due to continuous efforts made by late J Jayalalithaa and the Tamil Nadu Government, the Union Government has granted DAS licence to Arasu Cable TV Corporation,” the Tamil Nadu Government said in an official statement.

Arasu Cable TV began providing services in Tamil Nadu in September 2, 2011 after Jayalalithaa revived the corporation and provided a package of 100 channels to subscribers at a cost of Rs 70 per month, the lowest rate anywhere in the country. More than 65 lakh people are subscribers of Arasu Cable TV Corporation across Tamil Nadu. Welcoming granting of the licence, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami thanked Prime Minister Modi and Union minister for information and broadcasting M. Venkaiah Naidu for the move.
