Rains destroy standing, harvested crops in Telangana

Around 30 quintals of chilli crop got submerged in flood water within the Godavari belt region of Bhupalpally and Mulugu districts

Warangal: Unseasonal rains with hail storms and gusty winds from Saturday night to Sunday morning have caused a huge loss to harvested and standing crops at several places in erstwhile Warangal and Karimnagar districts.

Panchayatraj minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao on Sunday inspected crops damaged in various mandals of Palakurthy constituency in Mahabubabad district. He said officials of agriculture and revenue departments have been asked to estimate the crop loss. Once they submit their report, state government will take a decision on compensation for farmers whose crops have been damaged.

IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao called Rajanna Sircilla district collector Anurag Jayanti after learning about the severe crop loss due to heavy rains in several mandals of the district. Rama Rao asked farmers not to worry, as the state government is ready to help them.

A farmer died and another got injured severely at Yellapur village in Guduru mandal of Mahabubabad district. Daramsoth Shankar and Jarupala Kirya had been taking care of their corn crop when heavy rains and gusty winds started on Saturday night. They took shelter in the hut. However, the tree over the hut came crashing down, killing Shankar on the spot and fracturing both legs of Kirya.

Several low-lying areas within the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation area went under water due to heavy rains. Power supply got disrupted, causing inconvenience to residents.

According to officials, there has been severe crop loss in Gollapalli, Jagtial Rural and Raikal mandals of Jagtial district and Choppadandi, Karimnagar Rural, Gangadhara, Kothapalli, Dharmaram, Thimmapur, Huzurabad, Veenavanka, Jammikunta and Manakondur mandals in Karimnagar district.

In Huzurabad constituency, four houses got damaged when trees fell on them in Kondapaka and Brahmanapalli villages. 30 sheep died in Nustulapur village of Thimmapur mandal.

Congress party Choppadandi assembly segment in-charge Medipalli Satyam demanded that officials carry out a transparent survey and sanction ₹50,000 for each acre of crop damaged.
