Pinarayi Vijayan sees bid to distort history
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said the NCERT move to drop historic Rennaisance movement from the ninth standard text book is highly condemnable.
In a statement here, the Chief Minister said the move reflected the Sangh Parivar outook of distorting and rewriting history. The chapters signifying the movement of Dalit and backward communities in the country are being removed from the text books.
He said the historic struggle of women in Travancore against the ban on covering upper part of the body was being dropped from text books. The portions from C. Kesavan’s autobiography Jeevitha Samaram have also been dropped. This book had exposed the social injustice in the society during that period.
The Chief Minister said there was deliberate attempt to bury and destroy the valiant struggles of the dalits and backward communities in various parts of the country. It is clear that these attempts were aimed at wiping out the Renaissance values and historic women struggles from history, he said.
Mr Vijayan said these attempts from NCERT were taking place at a time when the state government had decided to include more chapters on the Renaissance values and also the principle of equality and justice in the text books. “Those who love this country should realise that the latest move was aimed at wiping out renaissance and progressive values from the conscience of the new generation,” he said.
