Madikeri: Tiger cub caught in snare dies

Necropsy revealed that the tiger, after it was trapped in the snare, tried to wriggle out and its neck got entangled in the snare.

Madikeri: A one-year-old tiger cub was found dead after it was caught in a snare probably laid to trap a wild boar at a coffee plantation at Harihara village of Ponnampet Territorial Range in Madikeri on Monday morning and the necropsy on the carcass revealed that tiger died after it was caught in the snare.

The carcass was traced around 9.30 am and on learning about the tiger death, Deputy Conservator of Forests Maria Cristo Raja, Range Forest Officer Gangadhar and forest officials visited the spot. The estate where the tiger carcass was discovered is about 5 km from the nearest forest boundary.

The coffee plantation belongs to Kushalappa and the plantation owner alerted the forest officials about the tiger trapped in the snare. “It was found hanging to the snare when we found it,” said a forest official, who was the first to reach the spot.

Necropsy revealed that the tiger, after it was trapped in the snare, tried to wriggle out and its neck got entangled and died. The snare, a forest official said, was laid using a barbed wire fence.

A forest officer told Deccan Chronicle that no arrests have been made so far and culprits would be caught soon. Ponnampet forest officials held a meeting to crack the case.
