Visakhapatnam Bar Association polls: Issues remain unresolved

High Court Bench in city tops agenda of contestants.

Visakhapatnam: Even after a wait of three years, advocates of Visakhapatnam Bar Association (VBA) are yet to get space for vehicle parking, criminal court complex and also High Court Bench. Though the three issues have been in the list of top priority for the contesting candidates in VBA elections for past few years, they remain unfulfilled promises. The annual elections to the Visakhapatnam Bar Association (VBA) will be held on April 7 and this time also the contesting candidates are chalking out plans to woo the voters by highlighting the same issues.

Senior advocate and president of Forum of Legal Professionals Kuppili Muralidhar said the old building of the court was demolished for construction of four new criminal court buildings. But, the works of the new criminal court are yet to begin even though the government has sanctioned Rs 30 crore. Similarly, vehicle parking at the district court complex is a major issue due to lack of proper space.

There is a large area of land at the veterinary hospital, adjacent the court complex, that has been lying unused for years and the VBA team has been claiming to get some land to overcome the parking woes, but their efforts have proved futile, he added. Setting up High Court Bench in Vizag city is on the top of the agenda of the VBA elections in 2016 and previous years also.
However, so far nothing has been done by the government in this regard.

Every year advocates contest for the VBA posts with the same three promises but they have remained issues as those elected have not been taking them seriously, once the polls are over. “We are hopeful that at least the upcoming body of VBA would focus on these issues,” said a few member of the VBA. The contestants have been campaigning vigorously for various posts of VBA for the last few days.
