16 killed in collision in Chitradurga
Bengaluru: Sixteen people died and 15 more were injured when a van collided with two autorickshaws after its tyre burst at Rampur in Molkalmuru taluk of Chitradurga district on Saturday afternoon.
The Tempo Traveller was heading towards Yadgir district from Bengaluru and the autorickshaws were moving towards Rampur from Nagasamudra village in Molkalmuru taluk.
The injured have been admitted to a government hospital at Molkalmuru. Those in serious condition have been shifted to a government hospital in Ballari.
Sources said that 25 people were heading in the Tempo Traveller to their hometown of Bevinahalli in Shahapur taluk in Yadgir district to attend the funeral of a relative from Bengaluru when the accident occurred.
Of the injured, three died at the government hospital in Ballari. The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.
Ballari district in-charge minister Santosh Lad and RDPR minister H.K. Patil visited the injured at hospital in Ballari. Mr Lad said that the government will offer free treatment to the injured. Minister Patil said that the government will ensure jobs under MNREGA to people in rural areas, so that they need not migrate to urban areas in search of jobs.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the families of each of the deceased.
