Karnataka governor demurs, but government firm on shifting RGUHS
Bengaluru: Despite Governor Vajubhai Vala, who's also the chancellor of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), purportedly opposing the move to shift the university’s base from Bengaluru to Ramanagara, the state government has decided to stick to its plan and start the process on Sunday.
Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who is also the Ramanagara district in-charge minister, on Saturday said that there is no opposition from the Governor, but a section of leaders who are opposed to the idea were spreading rumours. “There is not an iota of truth in this. On Sunday as per our schedule, the RGUHS will be headquartered in Ramanagara’s spacious Kandaya Bhavan,” he said.
Mr Shivakumar said that when he, along with Medical Education Minister Dr Sharanprakash Patil, met the governor to invite him for the event, Mr Vala just had a word of caution that it should not inconvenience RGUHS students. “Ramanagara may be a district headquarters for the purpose of administration, but it is indeed an extended part of Bengaluru. How can anyone find this to be inconvenient,” he retorted.
He chided those opposing the move, saying that they did not have any qualms when the Visvesvaraya Technological University was shifted to Belagavi and the VTU is now functioning without any problems. The shifting of RGUHS cannot be stopped because of administration issues, he said.
The state government has earmarked around Rs 1,000 crore to provide the infrastructure for a modern RGUHS campus in Ramanagara district, he said.
