Tamil Nadu: Students torch hostel, throw liquor bottles in Namakkal district
Namakkal: Students’ vandalism hit a shocking high in Namakkal district as students of a private engineering college near Rasipuram went on a rampage, set the hostel rooms on fire, flung liquor bottles and damaged the cots in their
rooms.
The hostel students of Muthayammal Engineering College were apparently protesting the suspension of two students who had allegedly indulged
in a fight, demanding supply of water in the hostel toilets.
In the private engineering college at Kakkaveri near Rasipuram with about 4,500 students, around 780 students stay in the hostel. On Thursday morning, two third year students, M. Manoj Prasad from Chidambaram and M.Tharun Varshan, who hailed from Bargur in Krishnagiri, had allegedly abused the hostel warden over lack of water supply in the toilets.
The college management suspended the two students for their unruly behaviour. In protest against the suspension, the students broke the cots, burnt the mattresses in the hostel rooms, threw liquor bottles, and set the hostel room on fire. However, the fire was quickly doused.
The college management shut the hostel and sent the students back home.
Following the incident, the Namagiripettai revenue inspector Vijayalakshmi conducted an inquiry into how liquor bottles were brought into the hostel rooms and whether basic amenities were provided to the students. Meanwhile, students alleged that drinking water facility is available only on the first floor of the five-storied hostel, which completely lacked all basic amenities.
