Kakinada: Police close in on Asha workers

The agitators demanded the district medical and health officer should come to the spot for addressing their problem.

kakinada: Tension prevailed at the Collectorate on Friday when the police forcefully lifted some agitating Asha workers seeking release of their salaries.
Hundreds of Accredited Social Health Activists (Asha) workers led by their workers’ association president Veera Lakshmi and CITU leaders G. Babyrani, A. Veeralakshmi and CPM district secretary Duvva Seshubabji staged a demonstration in front of the Collector's office seeking release of their salaries.

Though the police closed the collectorate gates, the agitators tried to enter it through nearby R&B office by jumping from parapet walls. However, the police arrested the leaders to prevent untoward incidents.

In the course of the police action, the leader Veeralakshmi sustained injuries and Ch.Padma and M.Venkata Lakshmi fell unconscious. Later they were shifted to Government General Hospital. The agitators demanded the district medical and health officer should come to the spot for addressing their problem.

After passing for three hours, the DMHO Dr. N. Uma Sundari reached the spot and promised them to bring the issue to the notice of the government.
She said that already three months of salaries have been credited in their bank accounts. She said that 104 services employees salaries would be given soon.
Later, the police released Asha workers.
