Average students find maths paper tough

While students who generally perform well seemed to have managed, average and below average students struggled with some questions.

Chennai: Students who took plus-2 mathematics examination on Friday were in for a surprise as some of the questions which were often asked in the past, were missing this time.

While students who generally perform well seemed to have managed, average and below average students struggled with some questions. Saravanan. R, a mathematics teacher at a government school here, said students found it difficult this time since they are always encouraged to practice previous years’ question papers as some questions get repeated every year.

“While good performers managed the questions, it was the average and below average students who suffered. Some chapters are easier than others. So, students end up being thorough with those chapters but even from these portions some questions were tricky,” he said.

However, teachers are confident that the below average students will still manage to pass the exam but average performers might be disappointed as they might not get marks as expected.

Surya Sekar, a former Principal of Velammal International, who runs a coaching centre said the two six-mark questions and two 10-mark questions were unpredictable ones, “ The questions were out of the ordinary, but I insist on my students that they concentrate more on learning the approach and the content than to just focus on getting the right answer. Two-thirds of the mark is given for the correct approach, so as long as they were able to do that. I’m sure students will manage to do well.” Vigneshwaran. V, a student of a prominent school at Anna Nagar, said he did not struggle too much with the paper.
