New skills required for job market: Experts

Most industry experts stressed on the fact that internships play a key role in training students for industry.

Hyderabad: The emerging job market demands new set of skills and Jobs based on old skills are disappearing. Institutions need to give hands-on experience to students so that they would know what is required of them and they should be trained accordingly, said experts at a conference on employability conducted by the Telangana State Higher council of Education (TSCHE) here on Monday.

Students need to be trained in problem-solving and decision-making as early as in Classes 8 and 9, said Mr R.S. Praveen Kumar, secretary of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Schools.

He said, “Since the last couple of years, we are sending our students to their villages in the summer holidays and asking them to find out three pertinent problems in their locality and what could be the possible solutions. We have got excellent results as they are more engaged in terms of understanding society.”

Most industry experts stressed on the fact that internships play a key role in training students for industry. Mr K.Sudhir Reddy, president of Telangana Industrial Federation, said, “Many colleges are limiting internships to the memorandum of understanding which is made mandatory by the AICTE. They are reluctant to do the ground reporting regarding industry’s needs and send students to learn.”

IT principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan spoke about value addition, skill development and freedom in thinking.

He spoke about the Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge and asked universities to encourage students to take up entrepreneurship which students preferred more than employment.
