T P Senkumar-Tomin Thachankary row turns ugly

Transport Commissioner refuses to release Rs 6 crore for Subhayatra

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In yet another row among the IPS top brass, state police chief T. P. Senkumar has accused Transport Commissioner ADGP Tomin Thachankary of not releasing funds from the Road Safety Authority, whereas the latter alleged that the police department was not submitting utilisation certificates for the funds allotted earlier.

Mr. Senkumar even brought the matter to Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy’s attention citing that road safety activities under the Subhayatra project was being affected because the funds had not been released.

He also denied allegations that utilisation reports were not given. “Except for some ongoing tender process, utilisation certificates of all funds received from the Road Safety Authority have already been given. Road safety activities are badly affected because of lack of funds,” said Mr. Senkumar.

Mr. Thachankary maintained that it was the decision of the Kerala Road Safety Authority that fresh allotment of funds to any department should be made only after getting utilisation certificates of the funds already allotted.

Over the last few months, the state had witnessed a series of incidents involving top IPS officers taking on each other; Mr. Senkumar and DGP Mr. Jacob Thomas over the bar bribery probe related issues and Mr. Tomin Thachankary and ADGP Ms. R Sreelekha over a corruption allegation against the latter pertaining to her tenure as transport commissioner.

According to sources, the present row pertained to the reluctance of Mr. Thanchankary in releasing Rs 6 crore sanctioned for Subhayatra road safety project by the police department.
