Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara: Devotees gather at mini altars

Altars decorated with vermillion installed for goddess.

KARIMNAGAR: Several hundreds of devotees congregated at mini-altars erected in various parts of the district as part of biannual tribal fair, Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara.

The inflow of devotees increased manifold at the venues with major event installation of deity Sammakka on the altars taking place on Thursday.

The fair is organised at 83 places across the district on the lines of the event held in Medaram in Warangal. Devotees who cannot afford to travel to the neighbouring district would gather at these altars places and worship the goddesses.

On the second day, the deity Sammakka was brought to altars from nearby Narasimha Swa-my hillock at Rekurthi, on the outskirts of the city. She was installed on traditional altars decorated with vermilion and turmeric powder. Priests performed special prayers to mark the occasion.

Sizeable devotees visited the altars and presented offerings to the goddesses not only at Rekurthi, but also at Goliwada of Godavarikhani, Neerukulla in Sultanabad, Veenavanka mandal centre and Ranganayakamma hillock in Huzurabad mandal.

As a customary tradition, they gifted jaggery weighing equivalent to their children for fulfilling their desires. Some devotees sacrificed fowls and goats as a token of gratitude for their well being.

Similar congregation were seen in other places in Peddpalli, Jagtial, Husnabad, Sirc-illa and other mandals. In order to ensure hassle-free darshan, authorities made elaborate arrangements.
