Kerala: Student killed, six hurt as tree falls on college campus
Thrissur: A student of Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur, lost her life and six others were injured, two of them seriously, when a huge tree fell on them following strong winds that lashed the district on Thursday morning.
S.A. Anusha, 18, of Chittilappilly in the district, student of first-year economics, who suffered serious head injuries, died in the hospital.
P.B. Layana of Sanskrit department and K.S. Suthila of Economics department were admitted to the ICU of Amala Medical College and Hospital.
Four cars parked on the campus were also damaged. In wake of the incident, the D-Zone youth festival conducted in the college was called off.
Anusha was sitting on a rock named ‘Vyshalipara’ near the playground on the college campus around 10.15 a.m. when the tree got uprooted in the winds.
“Hearing the sound of the tree coming down, Anusha and her friends tried to run away to safety, but she was crushed under the branches. Though they were rushed to Amala Hospital, Anusha’s life could not be saved,” Mr M.R. Suresh, SI of Guruvayur Kandanassery police station, said.
A case of accidental death has been registered under CrPC 174. He said that some parts of the trunk of the tree were found decayed.
Principal of the college, D. Jayaprasad, told DC that the tree which was near to the rock might have lacked deep roots.
The district administration has issued a warning to all educational institutions in the district to take precautionary measures to avert such incidents.
