Eco-friendly shop at Palayam soon

Apart from paper and cloth bags, the shop will also promote cotton reusable sanitary napkins and cotton diapers.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first-ever eco-friendly shop, which will promote the sale of responsible green products for various daily uses, by the city corporation will come up at Palayam soon. As part of its effort to ban usage of plastic, the corporation is planning to open five such shops in various parts of the city, including Kazhakootam, Technopark Campus and Chalai.

Apart from paper and cloth bags, the shop will also promote cotton reusable sanitary napkins and cotton diapers.

The civic authorities are gearing up to tie up with Tamil Nadu-based manufacturers to make available eco-friendly packaging materials for parcelling food. Health standing committee chairman K. Sreekumar said that the shops will showcase a slew of paper and cloth products.

“We are going ahead with our decision to minimise the use of disposable and single-use plastic products. A discussion was held with the hotels and restaurant association. The hotel owners who want these products can approach this store and order eco-friendly material,” said Mr Sreekumar.

The new shop will start its operation by February first week. “We have almost finalised the first spot for the shop at Palayam,” he added.

An official said that the sanitary pad is reusable for four years. “We will have to minimise the use of plastic. Ever since the launch of online food ordering apps, the quantity of plastic waste generation has increased exponentially in the city,” the official said.
