Hyderabad: Jawaharnagar, which is one of the disease affected areas in city, has the least medical facilities. The lone primary health centre is working without adequate medicines or staff, catering to 30,000 residents.
Despite the tall claims, neither the district authorities nor the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has provided any medical help to the residents. The corporation has been dumping about 4,500 metric tonne garbage at the Jawaharnagar dump yard on a daily basis.
According to a recent study conducted by environmental experts from the Osmania varsity, about 68 crore leachate had accumulated at the dump yard, contaminating the ground water and six lakes in the area. Leachate, is the contaminated liquid that drains through the waste and is a huge challenge.
The Jawaharnagar dump yard is spread over 300 acres. The air is impossible to breathe and parasites have increased manifold.
Residents of Shantinagar, Gabhilalapet, Giriprasadnagar and YSR Nagar claimed that there are more private clinics than provisional stories. Yadamma, a resident of Gabhilalpet, said that the residents are frequently subjected to several health-related problems. She said that due to the stench they often fall sick.
“We have made several representations to the civic body to resolve issue,” said K. Yellaiah, a resident of YSR Nagar.
Sikta Patnaik, additional commissioner (health), said that the corporation will look into the matter and will provide solution to the residents.
