Cabinet push for AIIMS in Hyderabad; 34 acres land to be acquired

The prestigious AIIMS will be set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.

Hyderabad: The Union Cabinet, meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday approved the establishment of an AIl India Institute of Medical Sciences in Bibinagar, 37 km from from the city, at a cost of Rs 1,028 crore.

The prestigious AIIMS will be set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.

A fortnight ago, there was announcement including Telangana in the AIIMS entrance examination list. From then onwards, the state health department circles were abuzz that the new AIIMS will be set up at Bibinagar.

Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences has developed the Bibinagar hospital. It has 166 acres of land, while the Centre states that an AIIMS should have 200 acres.

The state has appointed a private agency to assess the land ownership and facilitate transfer of the remaining 34 acres. The Centre has been given the land details. The Bibinagar Nims unit has an out-patient department. The doctors travel to the town and work between 9 am and 2 pm.

A full-time facility could not be set up there, and the number of patients coming in was not as estimated. Cabinet approval for the prestigious unit will speed up the process.
