Cong fought anger with dignity: Rahul accepts defeat in Gujarat, Himachal

Despite the loss, Rahul lauded Cong workers saying they have shown that decency and courage are it's greatest strengths.

New Delhi: After ruling Himachal Pradesh for one term the Congress on Monday lost against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recently concluded Assembly polls. In Gujarat too, the Congress was defeated for the sixth consecutive term.

The newly-elected Congress President who was also the star campaigner for the Gujarat elections this time accepted the defeat on party’s behalf.

The fight in Gujarat was almost neck-and-neck, while in Himachal Pradesh it was an easy sweep for BJP. The BJP got 99 in the 182-seat Gujarat Assembly, down 16 from last time, while the Congress picked up 80, up 19 from 2012.

On Twitter, Rahul Gandhi thanked the people of Gujarat and Himachal for the love and affection they showed towards the party.

Rahul, however, did not dissuade from taking an unnamed jibe at the BJP, despite the loss.

Addressing the Congress party workers as brothers and sisters, he said that is proud of the way they have "fought anger with dignity," which set them a pole-apart from the opposition.

To encourage his party workers and instil confidence among them, Rahul tweeted, “You have demonstrated to everyone that the Congress’s greatest strength is its decency and courage.”
