Chennai: Over a week after demonetisation was announced, people who have been tiredly waiting outside banks and ATMs only to find cash get over are demanding that cash is distributed through other channels, like the treasuries of state and government offices. “Shouldn’t the ATMs be equipped with a good amount of currency to meet the demand? Our employees are already overworked, and with the RBI running short of Rs 100 notes, old and soiled notes are being distributed. Why would anyone accept old notes? RBI should ensure that government staff enters the money exchange and distribution process instead of making bank employees take all the pressure, “ said a member of a bank employee association.
“There are treasury departments at all government offices, employees of which used to collect money from RBI and pay employees until some time back. These departments should be brought in for distributing and exchanging money so as to reduce the queues ,” said Roy Rozario, general secretary of People’s Voice.
