Chennai: Depressed over the sudden demise of her pet dog, a 13-year-old girl hanged herself in her home in Mangadu on Monday. The deceased has been identified as D. Akshaya, a class 9 student at a private school in Settipedu near Poonamalee.

The teenager was living with her parents at Sakthi Avenue in Mangadu. Police investigations revealed that Akshaya’s family has been raising a pet dog, which expired on Sunday after health complications.

According to the police, the dog had consumed a cosmetic cream in the house while playing with the girl and fell sick subsequently and died without responding to treatment.

The girl locked herself up and didn’t come out of her room for a long time. Alarmed, her parents knocked on her door and as it elicited no response, they broke the door open to find her hanging from the ceiling.

They brought the girl down and moved her to the Chromepet Government Hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Mangadu Police registered a case and handed over the body to the family members after the autopsy. In case of suicidal thoughts, Call 104 helpline and Sneha (helpline no: 044 2464 0060, 2464 0050)
