Chennai: 4,000 families struggle for drainage for 4 years

With the monsoon being active, the temporary repair works of roads and drainage may get delayed further.

Chennai: At a time when the Centre is talking about Smart City and digital solutions, about 4,000 families have been denied of drainage facility within Chennai city limits for the past four years.

“Close to 1,000 flats and individual houses in Nolambur and Mogappair (Ward 91, Ambattur) are spending heavily for drainage. Six years ago, work relating to pumping stations was started in the locality, but the project was abandoned due to poor engineering”, said Swaminathan Subramaniam, secretary, Jamba United Welfare Association.

“We are forced to run from pillar to post by the callous metro water authorities and there is no proper response about our applications seeking drainage connection”, said H. Sriram, a resident of Mogappair West.

There are six residential welfare associations awaiting the facility and we are worried about sewer overflow that becomes common during monsoon, he said.
According to municipal administration department sources, the contractors are now avoiding city corporation and Metrowater projects due to non payment of bills.

With the monsoon being active, the temporary repair works of roads and drainage may get delayed further. The corporation has pending payments running into more than Rs 200 crores for private contractors and this affects the repair and construction of new projects, sources said. Efforts to contact the senior officials of Chennai Metrowater proved futile.
